What's New (v3.0 — February 2026)

This release introduces Luna Chat, an AI-powered conversational interface that replaces the old goal creation wizard, along with major safety upgrades, supporter enhancements, and video coaching.

Luna Chat — Conversational Goal Creation

  • Chat with Luna to create goals — Instead of a multi-step wizard, you now have a natural conversation with Luna. Tell her what you want to achieve, answer a few questions, and she builds a personalized plan.
  • Goal Picker — A new starting screen with popular goals, Browse by Interests (Health, Work, School, Social, Fun), and Browse by Skills (Focus, Organization, Emotions). Or just type your own.
  • Confidence Cards — After stating your goal, tap a card to tell Luna your experience level: Complete Beginner, Some Knowledge, or Ready for a Challenge. This shapes the plan complexity.
  • Blueprint Preview — Luna generates a multi-phase plan (Learning, Practicing, Mastery) and shows it as a tappable card in the chat. Tap "View" to open the full Blueprint Drawer with every step, duration, and support level.
  • Step Selection Cards — Want to modify specific steps? Luna shows your current plan as checkable cards. Select the ones to change, then describe what you want.
  • Make Changes in Chat — Ask Luna to make the plan easier, harder, shorter, or different. She regenerates the plan and shows a new blueprint.
  • Motivational Send-Off — After confirming your plan, Luna gives an encouraging farewell and automatically navigates you to your new goal.

Safety & Content Moderation (Major Upgrade)

  • Three-Layer Safety Pipeline — Every message now passes through local keyword detection, OpenAI Moderation API, and unclear input detection before reaching the AI.
  • Safe Word Exceptions — The safety system is smart enough to know "skills" is not "kill" and "class" is not inappropriate. Normal goal conversations flow smoothly.
  • Crisis Detection & Resources — If you express distress, Luna immediately shows a full-screen modal with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Crisis Text Line. Direct tap-to-call and tap-to-text links.
  • Crisis Cooldown — After crisis resources are shown, the chat pauses for 5 minutes to encourage reaching out to professional support.
  • Fail-Closed Moderation — If safety systems experience a temporary issue, the chat pauses rather than proceeding without protection. A retry resolves it.
  • Content Safety Blocks — Harmful content is gently redirected with positive goal suggestions, never lectures.

Supporter Features

  • Owner Selection Cards — When a supporter creates a goal, Luna asks "Who is this goal for?" with card-style options showing each supported individual.
  • Automatic Owner Detection — Mention someone's name naturally ("I want Natalia to learn cooking") and Luna recognizes who the goal is for, with a confirmation step.
  • Supporter Goal Metadata — Goals created for others properly track both the goal owner and who set it up.

Video Coaching

  • Video Suggestion Cards — Luna can recommend YouTube tutorial videos during step coaching. Cards display the video title, channel name, duration, and a "Watch on YouTube" link.
  • Available in All Chat Modes — Video suggestions work in step coaching, step suggestions, and general help conversations.

Chat Persistence ("Resurrection State")

  • Auto-Save Progress — If you leave the goal creation chat before finishing, your progress is saved for 24 hours. When you come back, everything is right where you left it.
  • Stale Draft Notification — If your draft is more than an hour old, Luna lets you know: "Restored your previous draft — Pick up where you left off!"
  • Start Over — Tap "Start Over" in the top corner to clear everything and begin fresh.

UI/UX Improvements

  • Voice Input — Tap the microphone to speak your message instead of typing. Luna transcribes it automatically.
  • Typewriter Animation — Luna's messages appear with a natural typing animation.
  • EF-Friendly Language — Luna uses gentle, non-judgmental language. She says "If you feel up to it..." instead of "You need to..." and "Paused" instead of "Failed."
  • Motivation Recognition — When you share why a goal matters, Luna celebrates your motivation instead of redirecting you.
  • Hesitation Detection — If you feel overwhelmed, Luna gently asks what's making things hard and offers ways to simplify.
  • Topic Guardrails — Luna stays focused on goal planning. Off-topic requests get a gentle redirect back to your goal.

Other Changes

  • Home Tab Create Goal — The "Create First Goal" button on the home screen now opens Luna Chat instead of the old wizard.
  • Bottom Tab Bar — Properly hides when Luna Chat is open, so the chat input is always accessible.
  • Multi-Provider AI Fallback — Luna uses multiple AI services behind the scenes. If one is unavailable, she automatically switches to another.
  • 162 Automated Tests — Comprehensive test suites covering safety, parsing, components, and state management.

4. Creating a Goal with Luna Chat

Starting a New Goal

Tap "Create Goal" from the Home tab or Goals tab. This opens Luna Chat, a conversational interface where Luna guides you through creating a personalized goal plan.

Step 1: Choose Your Goal

Luna greets you by name and offers three ways to find a goal:

  • Popular Goals — Tap a badge to select from curated suggestions (e.g., "Learn to cook a meal," "Manage homework independently")
  • Browse by Interests — Explore categories like Health, Education, Employment, Independent Living, Social, or Fun/Recreation. Each category shows related goals.
  • Browse by Skills — Explore by executive function skill areas: Getting Started, Planning & Organizing, Focus & Remembering, Emotions & Stress, Handling Change, or Self-Advocacy.
  • Type Your Own — Use the chat input at the bottom to describe any goal in your own words.

Step 2: Tell Luna Your Experience Level

After you select or type a goal, Luna asks about your confidence level using tappable cards:

Card What It Means Plan Style
Complete beginner Just starting out More steps, higher support, gentler pace
Some knowledge Know the basics Balanced steps with moderate scaffolding
Ready for a challenge Push me! Fewer, more advanced steps

Step 3: Review Your Blueprint

Luna generates a personalized step-by-step plan organized into three phases:

  • Learning — Foundation steps to build understanding
  • Practicing — Hands-on activities to build skill
  • Mastery — Steps that push toward independence

A Blueprint Card appears in the chat showing:

  • Goal title
  • Number of steps
  • Total estimated time
  • Frequency (e.g., 3x/week)

Tap "View" to open the Blueprint Drawer — a full-screen preview showing every step with its title, description, estimated time, and support level.

Step 4: Make Changes (Optional)

Not happy with the plan? You have several options:

  • Ask Luna to adjust — Type something like "make it easier," "remove the phone call step," or "add a warmup."
  • Select specific steps — Luna can show your steps as checkable cards. Select the ones to change, then describe what you want.
  • Start over — Tap "Start Over" in the top-right corner to begin fresh.

Luna regenerates the plan with your feedback and shows a new Blueprint Card.

Step 5: Start Your Plan

When the plan looks good:

  1. Tap "Start this plan" (from the chat chips or the Blueprint Drawer)
  2. Luna creates your goal and all steps in Lunabeam
  3. A motivational farewell message plays
  4. You're automatically taken to your new goal's detail view, ready to start!

For Supporters

If you're a supporter (parent/caregiver), Luna adds an extra step:

  • Who is this goal for? — Luna shows cards for "Myself" and each person you support. Tap to select.
  • Automatic detection — If you mention someone's name (e.g., "I want Natalia to learn cooking"), Luna recognizes it and asks you to confirm.
  • The goal is created under the selected person's profile with proper attribution.

Goal Context

When Luna identifies your goal, she may show a context card with:

  • The life area your goal connects to (Health, Education, etc.)
  • Related executive function skills the goal will develop

This helps you see the bigger picture of your growth.

5. Understanding Execution Modes

Lunabeam supports different ways of working with goals.

Independent Mode

Best for: Individuals who can use a device and complete tasks on their own

  • Your individual uses Lunabeam on their own device
  • They mark steps as complete themselves
  • You can monitor progress remotely
  • You can send encouraging nudges or reminders

Proxy Mode (Assisted)

Best for: Individuals who need hands-on support or don't use their own device

  • You log in and track progress on their behalf
  • You mark steps complete after working with them
  • Your individual sees a read-only view of their schedule
  • Great for younger children or those needing more support

Setting the Mode

Execution mode is stored with each goal and can be set during creation or adjusted later in goal settings.

6. Goal Types

Lunabeam supports three goal types, each structured around a different growth journey.

Progressive Mastery

Best for: Building skills over time — learning to cook, managing homework, practicing self-advocacy.

Steps are organized into three phases:

  • Learning — Foundation steps to build understanding (e.g., "Watch a cooking basics video")
  • Practicing — Hands-on activities to build skill (e.g., "Cook a simple recipe with support")
  • Mastery — Steps that push toward independence (e.g., "Plan and cook a meal on your own")

Luna adjusts the number of steps and complexity based on your confidence level.

Mission

Best for: One-time projects with a clear endpoint — applying to college, preparing for a job interview, organizing a move.

Steps are organized into three phases:

  • Preparation — Research, gather materials, and plan (e.g., "Collect required documents")
  • Outreach — Take external actions and communicate (e.g., "Submit the application")
  • Execution — Follow through and wrap up (e.g., "Confirm enrollment")

Mission goals include:

  • Target deadline — Luna asks "When do you need this done by?"
  • Materials tracking — Expected documents and resources needed for each step

Habit

Best for: Building consistent daily or weekly routines — morning routines, exercise, journaling.

Steps are organized into two phases:

  • Learning — Understand the habit and prepare (e.g., "Choose a journaling style")
  • Practicing — Build consistency through repetition (e.g., "Journal for 5 minutes after breakfast")

Habit goals use frequency-based scheduling (e.g., 3x/week, daily).

How Luna Picks the Goal Type

When you describe your goal in Luna Chat, she automatically determines the best type. You can also influence this by how you phrase your goal:

  • "I want to learn to cook" → Progressive Mastery
  • "I need to apply to college by March" → Mission
  • "I want to journal every morning" → Habit

7. Managing Steps

Luna handles step planning during goal creation. After your goal is active, you manage steps through the Goal Detail view.

During Goal Creation (Luna Chat)

Luna builds your step plan through conversation:

  • She generates phase-organized steps based on your goal and confidence level
  • You can ask her to adjust — "make it easier," "remove step 3," "add a warmup"
  • She can show steps as checkable cards so you can select specific ones to change
  • She regenerates the plan with your feedback until you're satisfied

See Section 4 for the full walkthrough.

8. Daily Workflow & Check-Ins

For Independent Mode

Your individual:

  1. Opens Lunabeam and sees today's scheduled steps
  2. Completes a step in real life

  3. Mark the step complete on their behalf
  4. Rate how much support they needed
  5. Add observations about the session

Progressive Mastery Check-In

When checking in, the system captures:

Quality Rating (required):

  • 1-5 stars based on how well the step was completed

Independence Level (required, 1-5 slider):

  1. Full physical guidance
  2. Specific verbal prompts
  3. General reminders
  4. Independent with check-in
  5. Completely independent

  • Time spent (minutes)
  • Confidence before/after (1-5)
  • Notes or reflection

Friction Chips (optional — "What got in the way?"):

  • Distraction
  • Forgot
  • Refused
  • Overwhelmed
  • Tech issue
  • External interruption

Regression Detection

Lunabeam monitors independence ratings for skill maintenance:

  • If ratings drop significantly after mastery, the system flags potential regression
  • Supporters receive alerts to intervene early
  • Goals can be adjusted to provide additional scaffolding

9. Brain Blueprint Assessment

The Brain Blueprint is an optional 8-question assessment that helps Lunabeam understand how your brain works best.

Taking the Assessment

  1. Find the "Take Brain Blueprint" card on Home (or access via You → Profile)
  2. Answer 8 quick questions about everyday challenges
  3. Receive your EF Archetype result

Understanding Your Results

EF Archetypes include:

  • The Time Traveler – Strong in memory/emotions, challenges with activation
  • The Sprinter – Quick to start, challenges with follow-through
  • The Side Quester – Creative divergent thinker, challenges with focus
  • The Lone Wolf – Independent, challenges with collaboration
  • The Overclocker – High energy, multiple challenge areas

Each archetype includes:

  • Vibe: Description of the persona
  • Superpower: Your strength
  • Kryptonite: Your challenge area
  • Strategy: Luna's recommended approach
  • Mission: A specific first action to try

Results Page Components

  1. Progress Chart – Tracks objective data (goals completed, active days, steps finished)
  2. Archetype Badge – Reflects current state based on quiz answers
  3. Luna's Take – Validates both facts and feelings

Retaking the Assessment

Retake the Brain Blueprint anytime from the You tab. The archetype badge updates, but your progress chart remains based on actual data.

10. Insights Tab & EF Tracking

Accessing Insights

Tap the Insights tab to view EF analytics and progress tracking.

The EF Radar Chart

Tracks growth across 6 Executive Function pillars:

Pillar What It Means
Activation Getting started and overcoming inertia
Focus Sustaining attention and filtering distractions
Memory Working memory and remembering tasks
Planning Organizing, sequencing, and time management
Emotions Regulating feelings and stress response
Independence Self-advocacy and autonomous action

How Scores Are Calculated

Scores are based on:

  • Check-in data: Independence ratings and friction tags
  • Quality ratings: How well steps were completed
  • Difficulty ratings: How hard each step felt
  • Step feedback: Thumbs up/down responses

Understanding the Chart

  • Solid line: Verified data from actual check-ins
  • Dashed line: Baseline inferred from initial EF selection
  • Higher scores = greater independence in that area

Individual Selector

If you support multiple individuals, use the Individual Selector at the top of Insights to switch between views.

11. Rewards & LunaPoints

LunaPoints make progress tangible and motivating! Points are earned by completing steps, achieving milestones, and demonstrating independence — and they scale based on the life area and difficulty of your goals.

How Points Are Earned

Points vary by goal category and step type:

Step Type Points Examples
Habit / Action 5 pts Daily practice, routines, basic tasks
Skill / Practice 10 pts Applied learning, real-world practice
Milestone 20 pts Major achievements, leadership, streaks
High-Stakes 25-30 pts Job interviews, college applications, advanced goals
Scaffolding 2 pts Support steps and substeps

Points are category-aware — Employment milestones earn 30 pts while Recreation milestones earn 20 pts. Luna assigns the appropriate step type when generating your plan.

Goal Completion Bonus

When you complete all planned steps in a goal, you earn a one-time bonus:

Goal Category Completion Bonus
Education 10 pts
Health 15 pts
Independent Living 15 pts
Recreation & Fun 10 pts
Social Skills 20 pts
Self-Advocacy 20 pts
Postsecondary 20 pts
Employment 25 pts
General 10 pts

Mastery Bonus System

The reward economy scales with independence:

Level Condition Bonus Example (5-pt step)
Standard Independence 1-3 Base points only 5 pts
Self-Mastery Independence 4-5 on check-in +5 pts 5 + 5 = 10 pts
Verified Mastery Supporter confirms mastery +10 pts (on top of self) 5 + 5 + 10 = 20 pts
  • Self-mastery bonus is awarded automatically when you check in with independence rating of 4 or higher
  • Verified mastery bonus requires a supporter to tap "Verify Mastery" on the step
  • A single high-stakes step with full mastery can earn up to 45 points (30 base + 5 self + 10 verified)

Streaks

Lunabeam tracks your consistency:

  • Current streak — consecutive completions of your goal
  • Longest streak — your all-time best
  • In some categories (Recreation, Health), streak milestones are treated as 20-point steps

Reward Tiers

Supporters set up rewards with point costs in three tiers:

Tier Point Cost Range Examples
Small 50 – 150 pts Ice cream, 30 min screen time, small treat
Medium 200 – 500 pts Movie night, dinner out, a book

  • She asks about your goal, experience level, and preferences
  • She generates a personalized step-by-step plan
  • She can adjust the plan based on your feedback
  • She uses gentle, EF-friendly language throughout

See Section 4: Creating a Goal with Luna Chat for the full walkthrough. See Section 6: Goal Types for details on each type and their phases.

Reactionary Profiling

During conversations, Luna occasionally asks lightweight preference questions (e.g., "Do you prefer visual learning or reading?"). Your answers are saved to personalize future plans.

What Luna Sounds Like

Luna uses executive-function-friendly language:

  • Says "If you feel up to it..." instead of "You need to..."
  • Says "Paused" instead of "Failed"
  • Uses short bullet points instead of long paragraphs
  • Celebrates your motivation and effort
  • Never judges stalled progress or broken streaks

Crisis Detection

If Luna detects language suggesting distress:

  • A Crisis Resource Modal appears immediately with:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988

  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741

  • The chat pauses for 5 minutes to encourage reaching out

  • Resources are always accessible, judgment-free

15. Safety Features

Three-Layer Safety Pipeline

Every message in Luna Chat passes through multiple safety checks:

  1. Local Detection — Over 180 keywords, patterns, and emoji combinations are checked instantly on the server
  2. AI Moderation — Messages are verified by a secondary moderation AI. If this service is temporarily unavailable, the message is held (fail-closed) rather than sent unchecked.
  3. Clarity Check — Ambiguous or gibberish input is caught early and Luna asks for clarification

Smart False Positive Prevention

The safety system recognizes that words like "skills," "class," "method," and "grape" are safe even though they contain substrings that might look concerning. Normal goal conversations flow without interruption.

Content Safety

  • Harmful content is gently redirected with positive goal suggestions
  • Luna never lectures — she offers alternatives
  • Pre-curated goals from the library are already verified

Age-Appropriate Features

For users under 13 (with verified parental consent):

  • Analytics are cookieless and privacy-safe
• No public sharing options are available
  • All data handling follows COPPA requirements

Crisis Resources

Always available:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741

Luna surfaces these automatically if crisis language is detected, along with a 5-minute cooldown to encourage using the resources.

Q: Can Luna suggest videos? A: Yes! During step coaching conversations, ask Luna for a tutorial video. She'll recommend a specific video with a link to find it on YouTube.

Q: Who is the goal created for if I'm a supporter? A: Luna asks you before creating the plan. You can select yourself or any person you support. If you mention their name in your goal, Luna detects it automatically.

Goals & Steps

Q: Can I edit a goal after creating it? A: Yes. Tap into the goal and use the edit option.

Q: What if a step isn't working? A: Use the thumbs-down feedback, ask Luna for help, or edit/delete the step from the Goal Detail view.

Q: How many goals should we have active? A: We recommend starting with 1-2 goals to build consistency before adding more.

Q: What are the Learning/Practicing/Mastery phases? A: Steps are organized into three phases to structure the skill-building journey: Learning builds understanding, Practicing builds skill, and Mastery pushes toward independence.

Goal Types

Q: What types of goals does Lunabeam support? A: Three types — Progressive Mastery (skill-building over time), Mission (one-time projects with deadlines), and Habit (consistent daily/weekly routines). See Section 6: Goal Types for details.

Q: How does Luna decide which goal type to use? A: Luna determines the type based on how you describe your goal. "I want to learn cooking" → Progressive Mastery. "I need to apply to college by March" → Mission. "I want to journal every morning" → Habit.

Q: What are the phases? A: Each goal type has structured phases. Progressive Mastery: Learning → Practicing → Mastery. Mission: Preparation → Outreach → Execution. Habit: Learning → Practicing. Steps are organized within these phases.

Brain Blueprint

Q: What is the Brain Blueprint? A: An 8-question assessment that helps us understand how your brain works best.

Q: Can I retake the Brain Blueprint? A: Yes! The archetype badge updates, but your progress chart stays based on real data.

Q: What do the archetypes mean? A: Each archetype describes a pattern of EF strengths and challenges, with personalized strategies.

Rewards & Points

Q: How are points calculated? A: Points depend on the goal category and step type. Habit steps earn 5 pts, skill/practice steps earn 10, and milestones earn 20-30. You also earn a goal completion bonus (10-25 pts) when all steps are done.

Q: How do mastery bonuses work? A: Check in with independence rating 4+ to earn a +5 self-mastery bonus automatically. Then your supporter can verify mastery for an additional +10 bonus. A basic 5-point step can become 20 points with full mastery.

Q: What are reward tiers? A: Supporters set up rewards in three tiers: Small (50-150 pts), Medium (200-500 pts), and Big (800-1,500 pts).

Q: Where do I manage rewards? A: In the Rewards Hub, accessible from the You tab. Supporters use "Manage Rewards" to add/edit rewards. Users browse the "Reward Bank" to redeem.

Q: How do I approve redemption requests? A: Check the Redemption Inbox in the Rewards Hub. Tap to approve or decline. Points are deducted automatically when approved.

Q: Do streaks earn extra points? A: Streaks are tracked per goal (current and longest). In some categories like Recreation and Health, streak milestones are worth 20 points.

Safety

Q: What happens if I type something concerning? A: Luna immediately pauses the conversation and shows crisis resources (988 Lifeline and Crisis Text Line). The chat cools down for 5 minutes to encourage using those resources.

Q: Will Luna discuss topics outside of goal planning? A: No. Luna stays focused on helping you plan and achieve goals. Off-topic requests get a gentle redirect.

Technical

Q: Does Lunabeam work offline? A: Currently, an internet connection is required.

Q: Which browsers work best? A: Chrome, Safari, and Firefox all work well. We recommend using the latest version.

Q: Is there a mobile app? A: Lunabeam is currently web-based. Use your mobile browser for the best experience. Native iOS app coming soon.
